What will I do as Town Councillor?

I strongly believe that communities such as Llanidloes need to get a lot smarter and a lot more self sufficient.

Llanidloes has in its possession numerous assets that currently, due to poor management by the Town Council, form liabilities around the neck of the Llanidloes Council Tax payer.

Why do we pay the highest Council Tax in Powys?

Because of poor management of those assets by the Town Council:

  • a closed Community Centre costing £16,000 a year;
  • a Town Hall producing a deficit of £25,000 a year.

At present, this is money thrown away.

What value do you get in return?

The highest Council Tax in Powys, £85 per every band D property going to Llanidloes Town Council, an income in excess of £120,000, and they can’t even take on the responsibility for running a toilet block at the back of the Town Hall!

This is not local governance; this is not management – this is neglect. Neglect of responsibility, neglect of the opportunity that ownership of assets such as the Community Centre, such as the Town Hall, such as Allt Goch wood, offer to an enterprising community such as Llanidloes can become if the weight of inertia that currently predominates at a decision making level can be removed.

What will I do as a Town Councillor? I will offer a fresh perspective. I will use my regeneration experience to coax, cajole and persuade the Town Council into becoming an active partner in the development of the community. We need an enterprising Town Council, willing to try new things and ready to take a lead in creating the conditions that can deliver a prosperous future for the town.

I cannot do this alone.

The Town Council needs to undergo a wholesale change of thinking, and I fear that will only happen with a wholesale change of personnel.

The approaching elections represent a Chance for Change. Please embrace that opportunity and return a new council on May 1st.

FACT: Our current County Councillor has not had to fight an election in 13 years. Powys County Council can find no record of Town Council elections in the last 20 years. I strongly believe that voters in Llanidloes should have a choice and that it is time for new ideas and ways of working.
